The history of pharmaceutical compounding is almost as old as time itself. Specialization first occurred back in the 9th century and the evolution of the preparation and dispensing of medications has under gone many changes through the years. During the 1920's about 80% of the prescriptions filled in American pharmacies required a knowledge of compounding. By the 40's this number had declined to 20%.  Even in the early 1970's only 1% or less of all prescriptions combined two or more active ingredients.

Today custom compounding is increasing and physicians, medical institutions and patients are realizing the importance of tailoring an individuals medication to specifically meet their needs.
